Lance Ching

Epidemiologist at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health

Dr. Lance Ching, PhD, MPH is a dedicated public health leader committed to creating a healthier Hawaii for all. As the lead epidemiologist of the Surveillance, Evaluation, and Epidemiology Office (SEEO) at the Hawaii State Department of Health (HDOH), he oversees critical data analyses and investigations to inform strategies addressing complex public health challenges. The SEEO provides essential support to nine public health programs, including tobacco prevention, physical activity and nutrition promotion, and diabetes and heart disease management.

With over 15 years of experience spanning vaccine development, communicable and chronic disease research, and public health, Dr. Ching brings a unique blend of scientific expertise and community-centered focus to his role. His leadership at the HDOH is characterized by a rigorous, data-driven approach that prioritizes equity and improves health outcomes for all Hawaii residents. Dr. Ching has successfully led cross-functional teams in conducting epidemiological studies, managing large-scale surveillance operations such as the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), and translating data into actionable public health strategies.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Ching conducted research on HIV and tuberculosis vaccines and collaborated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a study examining hepatitis B virus among Alaska Native populations. These experiences deepened his understanding of the unique health challenges faced by underserved populations.

Dr. Ching's dedication to public health is evident in his numerous peer-reviewed publications and his role as Associate Editor for the Hawaii Journal of Health & Social Welfare. He is passionate about improving health outcomes for all community members and shaping health policy that centers on equity and social justice.

Dr. Ching holds a PhD in Pathobiology from the University of Washington, an MPH in Epidemiology from Emory University, and a BS in Biology from Yale University.
